Welcome to Gmail
Gmail is a free email service provided by Google that you can access from any computer and use it to work both on and offline. It is one of the world’s most popular services and perhaps that is because it combines so many different opportunities in one place for you.
Gmail, like any other email service allows you to:
- Send and receive emails
- Block spam
- Create an address book of your contacts
- And perform other basic email tasks
But it also has other unique features built in like chat and video conversations. Making it a great platform to do many things all with one login and interface.
Creating a Gmail account:
When you create a Gmail account you are actually creating a Google account…..
Your Gmail login, becomes the login for everything Google. This means whenever you login to your Gmail account, you are automatically able to access other Google services like:
- Google Docs
- Google Drive
- Google Calendar
- Google Plus
- Google Photos
- Google Blogger
Of course, you don’t have to use any of the other Google services and can simply only use Googles free email platform after you create an account.
Create Your Gmail Account
It is very easy to create your Google account. Simply go here (or click the image below) and follow the instructions.
Note: Do make sure that you use your real name and telephone number when you create your account as you will need these to verify the account and may also need them later if you lose your password or need help with anything…
Gmail offers several useful features to make your email experience as smooth as possible, including:
- Spam filtering (Spam is another name for junk mail)
Gmail uses advanced technologies to help you to keep spam out of your inbox and most spam is automatically sent to a separate folder and deleted after 30 days for you – it is important to check your spam box regularly in case something is auto-flagged as spam in error (if this happens you can mark it as non spam and it wont get filtered into the spam box in future)
- Conversation View
Whenever you send emails back and forth with another person or a group of people, Gmail groups these emails together by default for you, which keeps your inbox more organized and makes it easy to follow the conversation.
- Built-in chat & video calls
Instead of sending an email, with Gmail, you can also send someone an instant message and/or use the voice and video chat feature (if your have a microphone and webcam on your computer).
These chats and video calls use the Google Hangouts programme and are built into your Gmail window for you (Hangouts can also be used independently too)
- Phone Calls
This feature is similar to the video and voice chat, except you can dial an actual phone number and call any phone in the world, direct from your Gmail window. It’s free to make a call to anywhere in the U.S. or Canada, and you can make calls to other countries at relatively low rates too.
Get to know the Gmail Window
When you’re working with Gmail, you’ll primarily be using the main email interface (see image below). This window contains your inbox, allows you to navigate to your contacts, Mail settings, and more.

If you use other Google services like YouTube or Calendar, you’ll be able to access them from the small 9 dot grid at the top of the Gmail window.
